Sarasota Great Books Group
The Sarasota Great Books group meets every Friday from September through the end of June, from 10:30 A.M. to 12:30 P.M. We start this fall on September 19.
Dues are $60 per year. Our members take a turn once or twice a year leading the weekly discussion. They select one or two pieces of fiction – e.g two short stories or a play – or non-fiction – using either the many Great Books anthologies we’ve purchased or any other source they choose. Then they create discussion questions and lead the conversation. Sometimes we even present our own plays or poems!
The usual group size in winter is fifteen to twenty, usually evenly divided between men and women – and everyone joins in.
Selections chosen so far for the upcoming 2019 – 2020 season are:
Sept 13 – Greville Fane by Henry James, page 700, Norton’s Anthology and Snow by Ann Beattie, pg. 114, from the Norton Anthology of English Literature.
October 11 – On the Advantages and Disadvantages of History for Life, by Nietzche, page 237, from Great Books’ Great Conversations 6.
October 25 – Edith Wharton’s Roman Fever.
November 1 – Little Whale, Varnisher of Reality by Vasily Aksenov, and Action Will Be Taken by Heinrich Boll, from Halpern’s The Art of the Tale.
November 15 – A Rose for Emily by William Faulkner and The House with the Mezzanine by Anton Chekhov both from the Great Books 7 Deadly Sins Sampler.
