Sarasota Great Books Group
The Sarasota Great Books group meets every Friday from the beginning of September through the end of June, from 10:30 A.M. to 12:30 P.M. Dues are $60 per year. Participants take turns at leading the discussion, selecting one or two pieces of fiction or non-fiction, either from the many Great Books anthologies or from collections of short stories such as The Norton Anthology of Short Fiction. Sometimes we even present our own plays or poems. The usual group size in winter is twenty.
Some of the selections for the upcoming 2017/2018 season were:
September 8 “The Jolly Corner” by Henry James and “The Seaside Houses,” by John Cheever.
September 15 “Brother Grasshopper” by John Updike and “Intervention” by Jill McCorkle
October 20 “Morpheus” by Agnes Rossi and “Lost at C” by Jean Shepherd
November 3 “Disorder and Early Sorrow” by Thomas Mann
December 1 “In Memoriam: W.J.B.” by H. L. Mencken
December 15 “Leaves of Grass” by Walt Whitman
Stay tuned for more thought provoking selections!
